« CHAPTER 22 »

Birthrights and Wrong Births

“She’s… dead?”

Kassak slumped to the floor, his face blank with shock. Nim lowered his head to his hand, shaking it in regret, and Graon stepped over to Kassak, resting a consoling hand on the young ranger’s head.

“I truly am sorry,” Krin announced to them all.

“We need to go back for her. We can’t leave her…” Kassak struggled to force the words from his mouth.

The Dragon stepped forward. “Forgive me. The wounds she suffered were… cruel. Better to remember her as she was. I will establish a memorial in her honor, near Renna, so all will know of her courage.”

Kassak sucked in a shuddering breath, then stood and looked for a way out of the room, to find some privacy. There was only one doorway, and Krin did not stop him from using it.

“She saved us,” Nim said. “I saw her throw that pendant just before she fell.”

“I realize you may not be in the mood,” the Dragon said to them, “but please drink some of this. It is the enchanted water you partook of at our first meeting. It will refresh you.” He motioned to a table that had been prepared with a pitcher and several goblets. Lumina accepted, taking a seat at the table and waiting to see how events unfolded. Krin Ahgl moved to the Queen.

“What is your name?”

Kelli looked around, bewildered.

“Where are we?”

“I will answer all of your questions, child,” the huge golden creature said to her. “But you are tired and need to strengthen yourself. I suspect you have already wielded the Birthright during your escape. I can feel traces of the magic around you.” Kelli yelped as the creature suddenly changed its appearance. Where the twenty-foot, golden… Dragon… had been, now stood an aged but handsome man, dressed like an old-fashioned king, complete with crown.

“My name is Krin. And you would be?”

“My… my name is Kelli. Kelli Ingram.”

Krin looked past her at Derek, sniffed the air, and frowned. “And who is this?”

“This is Derek. Please, sir, he’s hurt, we have to get him to a hospital-”

Krin held up his hand, silencing her. “What is the meaning of this?” he asked the elves.

“Master Dragon?” Graon responded.

“Where is the jimani Guardian?”

“This… this is not him?”

“This boy is a human. This is not who I sent you for.”

“Forgive us, Master. He was the only one with the Queen. She said that he had rescued her, so we assumed-”

“Assumed?” The man didn’t quite yell, but Kelli could tell that he was perturbed. He turned again to her. “Who is the boy? What relation is he to you?”

“Relation? We-we’re not related. I-I just met him... a few days ago? On the plane. He rescued me from that monster.” Kelli gulped down several breaths. Krin noticed her fatigue and anxiety, and moved to the table where the black man —Lumina?— was sitting. Grabbing a goblet, he filled it with water from the pitcher and brought it to her.

“Drink this,” he told her. “It will make you feel better.
